Thank you for your answer and for pointing me to the array variables. Ha, the 
tutorials I found said they couldn't find real array examples easily, seems I 
did it the other way around ;-)
It's a pity that ASH doesn't know array variables.

Hmm, couldn't find more on this. Do you have somthing in mind? Might it be 
possible to construct some file_array() function I could then substitute all 
uses of bash array variables with?
